Drinking a smoothie a day keeps the doctor away! This Detox Green Smoothie is a fresh, banana free option that is bursting with vitamins and minerals.

Whenever the New Year hits, I am always looking to reset and refocus. A great way to do this is to really clean up the eats and fill my body with super nutritious, hydrating and detoxifying foods.

I needed to change things up a bit from my Classic Green Smoothie (which was my very first post ever, btw!) and have been testing out some new blends.

This one is for your health. It’s not a fluffy, sweet cloud of fruity-ness like this Creamy Cranberry & Vanilla Smoothie. It is hard core, green, citrus, fibre-y goodness. Drink it down and you will feel immediately grateful you did. It’s like the nutrients just start marching through your system giving you energy and not bogging you down. It is satisfying without being overly filling. No stomach bloat here!

Sound good? Of course it does. 🙂

DETOX GREEN SMOOTHIE

This particular smoothie may be hard to pass off on picky loved ones as the colour is pret-ty green.

People can be a little leary of me when I come creeping around with my green drinks, insisting they at least give it a sip. Don’t mind them. Proudly enjoy your glass of a better, healthier life and continue on with your day.

You will probably be much more effective and productive than the people refusing to even try it.

The components are all fresh. Romaine lettuce, fresh lemon juice, apple, and celery.

I also added in cucumber for the hydration. Lots of H2o in those cukes.

For an added boost I tossed in some hemp seeds. If you aren’t familiar with hemp seeds not only do they add great texture and flavour to a great variety of food, they are little powerhouses of nutrition.

Some of the benefits of hemp seeds are:

  • anti-inflammatory (great for arthritis or injuries)
  • source of vitamin E (think hair, skin)
  • lowers blood pressure
  • boosts immune system

Green Smoothies are such a great vehicle for getting in those greens. Just a few glugs and you put a big dent in your veggie requirement for the day.

Easy!

What comes across is the freshness of the lemon and the sweetness of the apple. This is banana-less smoothie, which is good for those who are looking to drop a few of those holiday pounds (who?me?) and want to cut out the higher sugar fruits. Maybe you just plain old don’t like bananas.

Either or, this is a great blend to try out.

  1. Can this be premade and refrigerated or do you need to drink it immediately? I’m trying to figure out how to do this at work if I can’t actually make the drink there.

    1. I tote mine with me to work all the time! Just find yourself a good shaker bottle and make sure to keep the smoothie in the fridge. Give it a good shake when your ready to drink. 🙂 It should be fine in the fridge for up to 8 hours.

    1. You’re right! I love bananas for creaminess, but if you want refreshing, this smoothie is where it’s at. Thanks so much, Natalie! 🙂

  2. Ok.. I’m in love with this site. I’m checking my “man” card at the door and going full blown 12 year old school girl gitty over all this stuff 🙂 Do you think that spinach would be an extra kick of good stuff over romaine? How much spinach would I use to make up those 3 leaves (leafs?)..no leaves of romaine?

    Off to explore more.. thanks!

    1. Hey Jay! What a nice thing to say. Thanks so much. 🙂 Spinach would totally work in this smoothie. Throw in a couple of good handfuls, maybe 2.5 cups worth. I find it best to blend the greens with the liquid first and then add the rest of the ingredients. I hope you love it and find lots of other great recipes to try when you ‘shop around’ the site. Thanks again for the great comment! 🙂

  3. I love the idea of a banana-free smoothie, and this one sounds great. I’ve not been able to find hemp seeds where I live, so will have to keep any eye out. Otherwise i guess I could just use some chia seeds in the meantime? Love your blog by the way, I just stumbled across you blog by the way and I love it – so many great recipes here! I love how the clean, fresh layout matches the style of your recipe too 🙂

    1. You’re such a doll 🙂 Thank you! I have heard that hemp seeds are difficult to find in some areas and to be quite honest they are on the pricier side so I don’t have them all the time. Chia would be a perfect substitution. Even ground flax would work. Have a great weekend!

  4. I love hemp seeds but I’ve never tried them in a smoothie. This looks like a great place to start! I feel healthier just looking at these beautiful pictures.

Do you have a Vitamix? I have a Ninja and it does a fair job but things like kale never get completely pureed and I’m not a fan of the little shreds in my throat…blech.

    1. I don’t have a Vitamix. Once my current blender (a 6 year old Hamilton Beach) dies I will own one. I agree about the kale. Sometimes I have to chew my way through kale smoothies. Not cool. I found the romaine blended well. I’m now throwing torn kale into soups instead of the blender 😉

  5. This looks delicious Sharon! I love that it’s banana-free, as my oldest daughter and I have an allergy to bananas. We’re always searching for new combinations to get that same creamy, sweet texture, so I’ll have to remember to try this. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Lauren! I have a friend with a banana allergy (and coconut as well!) so I throw in banana-free recipes for her. Avocado is always a good addition for creaminess without bananas as well 🙂 I hope you enjoy!
