Benefits of fresh grapefruit juice:

  • chockfull of vitamin C which, among many other things, is helpful to your body in absorbing iron
  • a good source of lycopene, associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease
  • thought to improve heart health by reducing risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol
  • grapefruit juice is an excellent source of calcium
  • great for weight loss as grapefruit juice is high in nutrients yet has low calories
  • a good source of beta-carotene, which is converted in the body to vitamin A

If those are the health benefits, I’m interested. This juice could give your immune system a nice little boost and we can call use some strong immunity juju to stay healthy, am I right?

Remember, however, juicing does take most of the pulp out of the grapefruit so it is not a good source of fiber like the whole fruit would be.

Ingredients for this recipe:

  • grapefruit – choose a red grapefruit such as a ruby red – the deep the redness the sweeter the fruit will be
  • mint – fresh leaves

Grapefruit is known for its bitterness, which is why sprinkling it with sugar is a tradition. Using the mint in this recipe helps to mellow the flavor of the bitter taste without added sugar.

How to make fresh Grapefruit Juice

When you have a juicer, the instructions are pretty easy when it comes to making fresh juice.

First, prepare the fruit for juicing by cutting it in half. No need to remove the thick grapefruit peels! A good juicer will handle it, peels and all. I use a Breville Juicer.

Second, give the mint leaves a quick wash.

Third, toss them in the juicer.

Next, you can either store the juice pitcher in the fridge or drink it right away. I recommend consuming fresh juice immediately so you retain all of the fresh goodness.

Finally, pour over a glass with ice. It is the BEST way to start your day.

  1. Mmm, minty grapefruit juice 🙂 I used to hate grapefruit juice when I was little, but have slowly grown to love it. One day – when I finally get my own juicer – I’ll definitely be trying this! 😉

Have a great vacation my dear! x

  2. That sounds really good and refreshing, perfect for a summer juice. I’m not a huge fan of grapefruits either, in fact I only eat them whole, like an orange, or juice them, but I hate any kind of “grapefruit flavour” otherwise.

    1. I’m glad I’m not alone on the grapefruit thing! Just so refreshing with the mint on a summers day…

  3. I actually really, really like grapefruit, so this is perfect! Plus, I’m currently sitting on my deck in the early evening warmth, watching over my kiddos and a yardful of neighborhood friends as they play all sorts of “night games” (which apparently include anything such as kick the can, ghost in the graveyard, tag, etc.) … and I am sooooo thirsty! What I should do is just reach over and take a sip of my ice water, but now what I really WISH I could do is reach through my screen and take a sip of this lovely juice! Oh yeah … you know I’m pinning it! Have an awesome time MIA (I’ve been there a bit myself lately! 😀 )!

  4. I LOVE grapefruit juice!! This one is perfect though – so fresh! so perfect! 11am on a Friday? I’d say no because in 1 hour I’m off for a weekend away, yay! Have an awesome trip Sharon, looking forward to more deliciuosness when you return! (and a sneak peak into your trip of course ;))

    1. Thanks Karen! I’m sifting through my 300+ pictures now … whew! And munching away on some chocolate peanut butter hemp balls. Recipe coming soon! 😉
