For special occasions (or a random Tuesday) I love to cruise to my favorite bakery on Granville Island and buy a loaf of challah for a delicious french toast breakfast. Challah is an egg heavy bread that is baked in the oven. It’s awesome for french toast as it is sturdy enough to soak up the egg mixture and not get soggy.

Ingredients you need:

  • a loaf of challah bread
  • milk of choice
  • large eggs
  • pure vanilla extract
  • maple syrup
  • oil and butter

I love using the freshest eggs possible and get them at my local farmer’s market whenever possible.

How to make french toast

First, set your pan over medium heat and add the tablespoons of oil and butter. Once the butter is foaming your pan should be hot enough. You can use salted or unsalted butter.

Secondly, while your pan is heating up, add the eggs, milk, vanilla, and a teaspoon of maple syrup to a medium mixing bowl. Whisk the mixture until well combined and bubbly.

Third, slice the bread to be about an inch thick.

Next, dip it in the egg mixture. Don’t let it drink up too much though as this bread can be like a sponge. Just place the challah slice in, flip it over in the bowl then take it out and place the lightly soaked bread in the heated pan.

After 2-3 minutes, check the underside for that nice golden brown and flip it over. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until both sides are crisped and brown. Transfer to a plate and repeat with the rest of the bread slices, adding a bit more butter to the pan as you go if needed.

This is the color I look for. Crispy and browned. Yum!

Serving ideas

  • if you want everyone to eat together place the cooked slices on a wire rack on a rimmed baking sheet in a single layer and keep the slices warm in the oven until ready to serve
  • add cinnamon or orange zest to the egg mixture for a gourmet flavor
  • serve with maple syrup, berries, cream cheese sweetened with brown sugar or custard
  • for festive holidays use your best dishes and play Christmas music in the background

Instructions

  • Heat a heaping teaspoon of butter and one of oil in a skillet over medium low heat.
  • Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, syrup, vanilla and salt. I then worked in batches to cook it up.
  • Dip a piece in the egg/milk mixture, flip once then transfer to the heated pan, adding more until the pan is full without being crowded. This depends on the size of the pan you use.
  • Move the pieces around a bit to make sure there is no stickage.
  • Flip after 2-3 minutes and cook on the other side for another 2-3 minutes. Continue with the remaining pieces, adding more butter and oil to the pan, if needed.
  • Serve warm.

Notes

  • if you want everyone to eat together place the cooked slices on a wire rack on a rimmed baking sheet in a single layer and keep the slices warm in the oven until ready to serve.
  • make this for twosave half the loaf for tomorrow! It comes out even better if the bread is a tad stale. Just half the rest of the recipe.
  • add cinnamon or orange zest to the egg mixture for a gourmet flavor
  • serve with maple syrup, berries, cream cheese sweetened with brown sugar or custard.
  • for festive holidays use your best dishes and play Christmas music in the background.
  • add protein with a side of bacon or low sodium ham.

Absolutely delicious! I love that this was such a simple and easy recipe to follow. Your tip to not oversoak the bread made a big difference too. Turned out great!

I had bought some challah and I really didn’t know what I was going to do with it. I saw your recipe and I knew exactly what I was going to do. I made the French Toast, and Hubby who does not eat sweets, gobbled up four slices. It was delicious. I’ll be buying challah again just so I can make this recipe.

    1. It’s a favorite of my husband as well! A smile forms every time he sees a loaf of challah in the grocery haul. 🙂 So glad you guys enjoyed!

  3. Now I’m curious what bakery you should be buying stock in! lol 😛

BTW, since you’re obviously a lover of French toast I HIGHLY recommend the one at Provence Marinaside in Yaletown. It’s amazing!!!! Surprisingly it’s made with French bread, and it seems to have been soaked in a delicious custard and somehow cooked in such a way that leaves a subtle sugar crust exterior. Basically, it’s the best thing you’ve ever had in your mouth!!! LOL

    1. Sounds pretty amazing! We’ll check that out for sure. The bakery is on Granville Island. A Bread Affair. Too good. 😉

  4. Hey Sharon! Long time no talk! You’re in Vancouver now and I’ve been….well…too damn busy! LOL! So I never heard about this study that cheese could be addicting, but I totally second you! I believe it could be. Cheese on EVERYTHING!! You know it!
I wasn’t sure what challah was when I clicked on your post, but I think I’ve tried this bread before, actually it was a few weeks ago when I went out for breakfast with my husband. I ordered a big ass plate of french toast, bacon and eggs! The whole shabam and it was fantastic! I could only imagine how amazing your recipe tastes. 🙂
