This blueberry chia seed jam recipe could not be easier to make. No need to bother with a saucepan or mashing, or pectin. All that is required is a blender and you’re ready to roll!

Chia jam is also made with the simple goodness of fresh fruit, allowing you to enjoy natural flavors and sweetness without the need for excessive amounts of added sugars or artificial ingredients. This is also a naturally gluten-free and vegan recipe.

Ingredients 

  • blueberries – fresh berries are ideal but thawed from frozen berries will also work 
  • chia seeds – these act as the natural thickener for the jam
  • water – the seeds will absorb the water to create a gel-like substance that naturally thickens the jam
  • maple syrup – you can also substitute honey but the recipe will no longer be considered vegan

Step 1

First, in a small dish, stir the chia seeds and water together. Set the dish aside and let the seeds soak for 10 minutes.

Step 2

Next, place the blueberries in a blender along with the maple syrup and add in the soaked chia seeds which will now be a gel.

Step 3

Then, pulse the mixture in the blender until it’s a ‘jammy’ consistency. It only needs a few pulses with ripe-ish blueberries. Use your discretion if you like a smoother jam or keep a few bigger pieces of the blueberry.

Step 4

Finally, pour the jam into a small glass jar with a lid. Be sure to use a clean and dry jar.

Expert Tip

Choose ripe blueberries that are plump and firm to the touch. Sweet, ripe blueberries with the freshest juices will naturally enhance the taste of your jam. 

Recipe variations

Add a bright twist by incorporating lemon. Simply add the zest and juice of one lemon to your blueberry chia jam mixture before blending. The lemon will complement the sweetness of the blueberries and add a tangy note to the jam.

Add half a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract or the seeds from one vanilla bean to the jam mixture before blending. The vanilla will give a sweet fragrance and depth of flavor to the jam.

Mix blueberries with other berries like strawberries, raspberries, or blackberries to create a delightful mixed berry medley of flavors.

Can I use chia jam as a substitute for regular jam in recipes? 

You can! It is a wonderful, healthy alternative with much less sugar.  Feel free to get creative and incorporate chia jam into your favorite recipes.

Can I reduce the amount of sweetener in blueberry chia jam? 

Yes, you can adjust the amount of sweetener to suit your preference. Blueberries are naturally sweet, and the chia seeds also add some natural sweetness as they absorb the juice. Start with less maple syrup and taste the jam as you go, adding more if desired.

Can I use ground chia instead of whole chia seeds?

Yes, you can definitely use ground chia seeds instead. Ground chia seeds will still absorb liquid and create a gel-like consistency, similar to whole chia seeds. Follow the same process and proportions as you would with the whole chia seeds.

Storing and Freezing

Store in a glass jar with a lid in the fridge. Chia jam will typically last for up to 2 weeks when stored properly in the refrigerator.  

You can also freeze chia jam for longer-term storage. Transfer the jam to airtight containers or freezer-safe jars and label and date the containers. This makes it easier to keep track of the jam’s freshness. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

  3. I love all kinds of jam, homemade better, but I hardly make my own, relying on my father who is the jam maker 😉 . This looks and sounds good and simple to make. I like the addition of the chia seeds. I am trying to incorporate them more in our diet, they are truly a super food!
