Why YOU will love this recipe

  • Chocolate and almonds are a classic pairing with satisfying sweetness and crunchy texture.
  • Almonds are a nutritious snack on their own, as they are a good source of healthy fats, protein, and fiber. Combined with dark chocolate, which contains antioxidants and may offer some health benefits, chocolate-covered almonds can be seen as a more balanced indulgence compared to more processed desserts.
  • When you make homemade treats you have control over the quality and freshness of the ingredients. Choose organic almonds and chocolate.
  • This recipe is naturally vegan, and gluten-free. Bonus!

Ingredients

Find the full ingredient list, with measurements, in the recipe card below.

  • dry roasted almonds – Using roasted nuts really adds to the flavor.
  • dark chocolate chips – For a vegan recipe be sure to check the label for any dairy products.
  • coconut oil – This helps the chocolate set into a shell after melting.
Ingredients on a tray.

Equipment

  • small saucepan – For melting the chocolate.
  • baking sheet – We use a quarter sheet pan that easily fits into the freezer.
  • parchment paper – A must for no sticking and easy cleanup. We recommend unbleached parchment paper.

Step 1

Start by lining a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set it aside.

Step 2

Next, add the chocolate chips and coconut oil to a small saucepan and set it over medium heat.

Stir until the chocolate has melted and the mixture is smooth.

No double boiler is needed!

Step 3

Then, add the roasted almonds to the pot and coat them with the melted chocolate.

Step 4

Next, use two forks and transfer the almonds one by one to the parchment-lined baking tray.

You can also just pour the mixture out and spread it around. This method requires breaking up the almonds from the excess chocolate after it is chilled and set. You can also just enjoy them as chocolate almond clusters! It will be similar to a bark recipe.

Step 5

Finally, pop the tray into the freezer for 30 minutes to set.

Recipe variations

  • Switch up the nuts and substitute pecans, macadamia nuts, cashews, walnuts, or hazelnuts.
  • Experiment with different chocolate varieties like milk chocolate, bittersweet, or semi-sweet.
  • Add a drop of peppermint extract or food-grade peppermint essential oil to the chocolate for a refreshing minty flavor.
  • Give this recipe some spice and dust the almonds with spices like cinnamon, cayenne pepper, or chili powder before coating them in chocolate.

Serving suggestions

  • The simplest way to enjoy these is to eat them straight out of the bowl.
  • Sprinkle chocolate-covered almonds on top of yogurt, ice cream, or frozen yogurt for a sweet and crunchy topping.
  • Pop them into a jar with a cute bow and give them as DIY gifts.

What a simple recipe, glad I found it. I made these almonds just for fun but I loved them so much I did make a batch for a gift like you mentioned. I also loved the sea salt on top.

  3. Chocolate covered almonds are my favourite!!! I rarely think to make them though. You’ve just sparked a craving!

  4. Omg. Okay. These were a childhood faaaavorite of mine. I used to get so stoked when kids would come to the door selling them, and of course my Dad would get a couple of boxes — one for me, and one for him. They’ve become such a nostalgic treat, and I have no idea why I never thought to just make some myself! Brilliant.

    1. Right? There was the door to door back in the day. Those tasted so much better than the store bought ones on the shelves now. Making my own was a total trip down memory lane! Very reminiscent of the old flavour. Get to doing! They are easy peasy. 🙂 Thanks Dana!

  5. What a great idea ! So easy and simple ! My daughter and I love to snack on roasted almonds, with the chocolate coating, I think we will eat even more ! Thanks for sharing !

  6. Goodness I hadn’t even thought to make my own, but they definitely would not last in our house! Thanks for the recipe!

  7. Dairy animal cruelty is one of the best examples of how practices can be both horrible and socially acceptable. To stop animal cruelty go vegan.

  8. I love Costco! I buy my brussels sprouts there, so much cheaper than the grocery store. Also the big bag of organic broccoli, which is great for making broccoli salad. I accidentally bought a big bag of plain almonds ? so I will definitely be trying this out on them. Great pic!

    1. Thanks Michelle! I welcome any and all Costco tips. 😉 I just picked up a colossal bag of pecans today, so I’m anticipating a number of nut posts in my future. 🙂

  9. I love chocolate covered almonds (does anyone not?) These wouldn’t last long in my house. They sound easy to make, too. Thanks for sharing!
