Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • Vitamin C is an important building block for healthy immunity. A fabulous way to obtain it is through the juice of fresh oranges. Doesn’t a healthy orange smoothie sound like a great way to get that vitamin C?
  • It tastes like a healthier Orange Julius that you might remember getting at the mall or maybe one of the creamsicle popsicles you grabbed at the ice cream truck as a treat when you were a kid. This smoothie has a heartwarming nostalgic taste.

Ingredients

  • Orange juice – Use freshly squeezed juice or buy 100% orange juice from the store.
  • Frozen bananas – These are key to obtaining that frozen drink vibe.
  • Avocado – Adds a velvet creaminess with a boost of healthy fats.
  • Vanilla Extract – A hit of vanilla gives you that old-school orange creamsicle popsicle taste.

Expert Tip

If you use store-bought orange juice, be sure to check that there are no added sugars. Look for the label to say 100% juice to make sure it is a healthier choice.

Recipe Variations

  • For a bit of natural sweetener, drizzle in a smidge of honey or maple syrup.
  • Swap out the orange juice for pineapple juice and enjoy a healthy Dole Whip knockoff. Frozen peach or mango would also be delicious fruits to substitute in this recipe.
  • If you don’t have frozen bananas add 2-3 ice cubes instead and add a bit of milk. Keep the smoothie vegan by using almond milk, full-fat coconut milk, or homemade hemp milk.
  • Amp up the nutrition and make this smoothie green with a handful of spinach or kale.
  • Boost the protein with a spoonful of Greek yogurt, a tablespoon of chia seeds, flax seeds, or a scoop of protein powder. One of our favorite protein powders with a super healthy ingredients list is Ora So Lean So Clean.

Serving Suggestions

  • Top with orange zest from the peel for a professional-looking presentation.
  • Garnish with fresh orange slices on the side of the glass.
  • Enjoy it as a smoothie bowl! This fresh orange smoothie recipe is so thick and creamy that you could eat it with a spoon. The frozen bananas and the luscious avocado create such a creamy texture, almost like a soft-serve consistency.

  1. Aldi sells organic unsweetened vanilla and regular almond milk. I can’t say anything about the rest of the ingredients list as I can’t remember it.

  2. It’s very easy to make your own organic almond milk! All you need is a high speed blender, organic almonds and filtered water. Oh, and something to strain the milk with. A nylon Nut Milk Bag is great, cheesecloth tends not to be strong enough. I make my almond milk with one cup almonds to about 3-1/2 cups water, for about a quart of almond milk. You can water it down further if you like. The best thing about it is that there are only two ingredients, almonds and water! No extra mysterious anything! And it takes about 5 minutes to make. I use my own almond milk for all my smoothies. Also, the leftover pulp (almond meal) can be mulch for your garden or you can dry it out and use it in baking as a flour alternative.

    1. Thanks so much Sara! Great method. I’m in the planning stags of a new blender currently. Homemade milk, here I come! 🙂
