Why we love this recipe

Oats for breakfast are a staple, but when the weather starts to warm up we just don’t crave a hot meal in the morning. This smoothie recipe is an easy, cool, and refreshingly delicious way to have my oatmeal during the summer months.

This gluten-free, healthy breakfast smoothie is the ultimate choice for hectic mornings. Just blend and pour and you’re out the door.

Ingredients

  • oats – use either quick oats or old-fashioned oats. They both have a mild, nutty flavor that complements the rest of the smoothie ingredients.
  • Greek yogurt – besides adding a silky, creamy texture, Greek yogurt also brings a good boost of protein, calcium, and beneficial probiotics. We use plain yogurt to avoid any artificial sweeteners.
  • milk – use dairy milk or plant-based milks such as almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk.
  • water – we like using filtered water from our handy Propur.
  • strawberries  – any berries work in this recipe, like blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries for example – fresh or frozen.
  • banana – a ripe banana is perfect for added sweetness.

Equipment

  • blender – a high-speed blender such as a Vitamix or Blendtec is the top choice for smoothies but a bullet blender works fine too. Just be sure not to overload a smaller blender.
  • large drinking glasses – we like to drink from a bigger-sized cup. Or use a great travel cup like a Stanely tumbler if we’re on the go.

Expert tip

When you have a few brown bananas, peel them, break in half, and pop them into a freezer bag. Be sure to remove as much air as possible to prevent any freezer burn.

Store the bag in the freezer for up to 6 months. Use these frozen bananas for not only smoothies but baked goods, like Banana Protein Muffins, or other frosty treats such as Banana Nice Cream.

Recipe variations

  • Supercharge the protein in this smoothie by adding protein powder! We recommend a clean product like Ora protein powder that doesn’t have any artificial ingredients. Boost the protein even more by sprinkling a tablespoon of chia seeds on top!
  • Make it a green smoothie and toss in a handful of spinach or kale and get the health benefits of those leafy greens.
  • Drizzle in a teaspoon of vanilla extract to make this recipe taste just like a milkshake.

Serving suggestions

  • Pour it into a mason jar with a lid for a rustic and trendy presentation. They also work well for traveling with you on the go.
  • Turn this recipe into a smoothie bowl by pouring it into a bowl instead of a glass. Top it with various toppings like fresh fruits, nuts, seeds, and a handful of granola for added flavor and texture.

FAQS

Can I use flavored instant oatmeal packets in a smoothie?

Unfortunately, most of the premade products contain artificial sweeteners and flavorings, so we recommend using plain oats and adding your own sweetener with the addition of fresh fruit. You could also add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup if you wanted a tad more sweetness.

Can I customize my breakfast smoothie based on dietary preferences or restrictions?

For sure! You can quickly source out gluten-free oats by checking the label that it reads certified gluten-free. If you want a dairy-free vegan option, replace the Greek yogurt with a thick and creamy coconut yogurt or cashew yogurt.

Storage

This smoothie tastes best when enjoyed right away but it can be stored in the fridge for up to 1 day in a sealed container.

Shake it really well before drinking. Using a really good shaker cup, like a blender bottle, makes this task much easier!
