Ingredient notes

Find the complete ingredient list, with measurements, in the recipe card below.

  • Water – Is that even an ingredient? Well, today it is. I use filtered water from my trusty Propur.
  • Plain Greek Yogurt – Generally, I use Greek yogurt for its creaminess, but Balkan yogurt or just regular yogurt all work great.
  • Protein Powder – Choose your favorite. My pick lately is Plain Nutrition. It is a Canadian company and has a great ingredient list. If you’re in the USA, my recommendation is for Ora brand.
  • Frozen Fruit – Obviously, in this recipe, the fruit is mango and banana, and they bring the natural sweetness. You can grab frozen mango chunks at Costco for a decent price and follow this guide on how to freeze bananas, so you have them on hand.

Expert Tip!

Use frozen fruit for the thickest and creamiest smoothies. Fresh fruit can dilute the blend and make it watery, whereas frozen fruit can create a more milkshake-like texture.

Equipment

  • Blender – Any blender will work, but a high-powered blender is best for this banana & mango smoothie because we’re using frozen fruit. I use my treasured Vitamix blender.

Step 1

So, it is a smoothie recipe, and we aren’t reinventing the wheel, but there are a couple of tips to make your smoothie turn out the best.

First, the order in which you add the ingredients can be important. Starting with the liquid, in this case water, then soft ingredients like the yogurt and protein powder, then the frozen fruit goes on top.

The liquid at the bottom allows the mixture to flow easily, and the heavier frozen fruit will fall into the vortex and blend in perfectly.

Step 2

Next, blend. Once the ingredients are layered in, blend them up until smooth and creamy. In my Vitamix, it takes less than one minute.

Then, pour and enjoy.

Substitutions and recipe variations

If you want to boost your electrolytes, you can use coconut water instead of plain water.

Make it even creamier by subbing half the water with milk or plant-based almond milk or coconut milk.

A fun substitute for protein powder is powdered peanut butter. It tastes so darned good.

Easily spin this into a vegan recipe by using coconut yogurt.

Serving suggestions

Portion into a glass and enjoy for breakfast on the go or a quick lunch. I like having it midday for a fast energy boost.

Get fancy and garnish the top with fresh mint, chia seeds, hemp seeds, coconut, and/or berries.

Storage tips

To Store: Keep it in the fridge in an airtight jar or bottle. Shaker cups and mason jars both work great. It will keep in the fridge for 24 hours. Separation is normal, so be sure to give it a good shake before drinking.
