Why YOU will love this recipe

  • You only need FOUR ingredients plus water! So simple.
  • Breakfast is ready in less than 5 minutes. You can’t beat that for those busy mornings and with a whopping 44 grams of protein you will stay full until lunch.
  • The taste is sweet and creamy! Spirulina on its own is a bit grassy and earthy but adding the fruit and vanilla protein powder masks the bitterness.

What is spirulina?

Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that is commonly taken as a supplement in the form of powder or tablets. It offers several potential health benefits including immune support, blood sugar control, and cholesterol management.

Ingredients

Find the full ingredient list, with measurements, in the recipe card below.

  • banana – We use a ripe banana for optimum sweetness! You can also use frozen bananas for more creaminess.
  • strawberries – Use fresh when possible and frozen strawberries when they are out of season. We typically buy a big bag of frozen sliced berries from Costco.
  • protein powder – This adds staying power to the smoothie. We recommend using the Ora brand “So Lean So Clean” in vanilla flavor. This product is free from any toxic ingredients or artificial sweeteners.
  • spirulina powder – Ours is Organika Spirulina and we highly recommend this brand. It generally can be found in grocery stores, Amazon, or health food stores.

  • blender – You can use a high-speed blender like a Vitamix or Blendtec or a personal-sized blender such as a Nutribullet. They all work for this recipe.

Step 3

Then, scoop the protein powder and the spirulina on top of the fruit.

We typically put the fruit in first so the powders will blend in better and not sit at the bottom of the blender.

Finally, add water and then blend until smooth and frothy.

Expert tip

Using frozen fruit is key for a super creamy and frosty smoothie.

A great tip is to peel and freeze your ripening bananas, break them into pieces, and store them in the freezer. Then they are ready to go for adding to smoothies.

Recipe variations

  • Make this recipe even creamier by using milk instead of water. Dairy milk or plant-based such as almond milk and coconut milk both work.
  • Boost the protein even more by sprinkling in hemp seeds or chia seeds to the blend.
  • Create a tropical version by substituting pineapple and frozen mango as the fruit.
  • Experiment with adding leafy greens to the smoothie like spinach or kale for added nutrition.

Serving suggestions

  • Grab a spoon and turn this into a smoothie bowl! You might have seen those beautiful mermaid bowls on the gram. Top the bowl with coconut, fresh fruit slices, and a sprinkle of chia seeds.
  • Serve in a chilled glass with a glass straw.
  • For extra sweetness and a decorative touch, drizzle a small amount of honey or maple syrup on top.

FAQS

What are the health benefits of spirulina?

Spirulina is exceptionally protein-rich and provides all essential amino acids, making it a complete protein source, which can be particularly beneficial for vegetarians and vegans.

It is also a concentrated source of essential nutrients, including B vitamins, minerals such as iron and magnesium, and trace elements including selenium and zinc.

Some studies suggest that spirulina may help boost the immune system by enhancing the production of immune cells and antibodies. This can potentially aid in the body’s defense against infections and illnesses.

What does spirulina taste like?

Honestly, not good. It smells and tastes like lake water. This is why I add a banana to this recipe as banana is a strong sweet flavor and it masks the funky taste of the spirulina.

Storage tips

This spirulina smoothie is best enjoyed right away. If you need to take it on the go with you, we suggest a good shaker cup so you can give it a good shake and mix it up before drinking.
