Why you will love this recipe

Firstly, it is super simple, fast, and easy. Just chuck everything in a blender and go.

It is a nutrient rich, plant-based milk option for those with lactose intolerance, allergy concerns, or just plain not doing dairy.

Hemp seeds have a ton of great health benefits. They are rich in fatty acids and healthy fats such as omega-3s and omega-6.

Nut-free, soy-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugar-free, boom.

Ingredients

Find the complete ingredient list, with measurements, in the recipe card below.

  • Hulled Hemp Seeds – Obviously. 😉 Hemp seeds are soft and nutty, and when blended, they get thick and creamy, making them perfect for making dairy-free milk.
  • Fresh Water – Our tap water can be a little sus when it comes to quality, so we use a Propur pitcher for clean, filtered water.
  • Natural Sweetener – Use medjool dates, maple syrup, honey, or a combo. I generally have dates kicking around, so I use those.
  • Cocoa Powder – Choose a brand like Whole Foods 365 cocoa powder that is unsweetened, preferably organic, and fair trade.
  • Vanilla – A touch of vanilla extract gives your milk a warm, classic sweetness.
  • Salt – Just a pinch of fine sea salt will bring out the best in your ingredients.

Expert Tip!

Choose cacao powder instead of cocoa powder for a bigger boost of antioxidants, magnesium, and iron.

Equipment

Only two items are needed to make this super simple recipe.

  • Blender – A high-powered blender like a Vitamix or Blendtec, of course, would work amazingly, but it isn’t a requirement. I make this recipe right in my bullet blender, and it comes out perfectly.
  • Mason Jar with Lid – This is for storage. Using the jar with the airtight lid keeps it fresh and also makes it easy to shake it up before drinking.

Step 1

First, if your dates are not super soft, soak them in warm water for five minutes to soften them. This makes them easier to blend.

Step 2

Next, add the ingredients to your blender and blend until it is smooth and has a creamy texture.

That’s it!

Substitutions and recipe variations

  • Add a small scoop of nut butter (we love almond butter) to make the blend extra rich.
  • Sprinkle in some espresso powder for a mocha taste. This also helps to deepen the taste of the chocolate flavor.
  • Make it warm and toasty with a touch of cinnamon.

Serving suggestions

  • Enjoy this chocolate hemp seed milk chilled as a cool drink or warm it up for a hot cocoa vibe.
  • Works well in smoothies for added creaminess and plant-based protein.
