Ingredient notes
Find the complete ingredient list, with measurements, in the recipe card below.
- Greek Yogurt – Adds creaminess and protein.
- Sweetener – We use just a drizzle of maple syrup for a touch of natural sweetness.
- Chocolate Protein Powder – Choose your fave! We like Ora brand protein powder for its clean ingredient list.
- Peanut Butter Powder – This is a fun secret ingredient. It adds a peanut butter cup vibe and an added boost of protein. I find it at a good price at Costco.
- Avocado – More creaminess and a nice serving of fiber and healthy fats.
- Frozen Banana – The key to having a thick, creamy, soft serve ice cream texture is frozen bananas. Check out this excellent guide on how to freeze bananas and always have a stash on hand.

Equipment
Some key pieces are required.
- High-Speed Blender – You really need a high-powered machine like a Vitamix blender or Blendtec for smoothie bowls. You could also use a food processor, if you have one.
- Tamper or Spatula – Use the tamper to get the thick mixture moving or use a spatula to scrape down the sides.
- Ten variable speeds allow you to blend the smoothest smoothies.
- BPA Free.

Step 1
First, place the ingredients in a high-speed blender in the order listed, with the softer items first, followed by the powders, then the frozen fruit last.
Expert Tip!
Be sure to use frozen bananas. They are the secret ingredient behind thick smoothie bowls.
Step 2
Then, start the blender on low, then increase the speed to medium-high.
Use the tamper, or turn it off and scrape down the sides if needed. Add an additional tablespoon of water if needed.
Blend until it is a smooth consistency.
Step 3
Transfer the mixture to a bowl and add your toppings

Substitutions and recipe variations
Make this recipe vegan by using plant-based protein powder and coconut yogurt instead of Greek yogurt.
For an even richer flavor, sprinkle in a bit of natural cocoa powder or raw cacao powder.
Add frozen strawberries, raspberries, or cherries to the blend for a fruity twist.
Sprinkle in a drop of peppermint extract for a mint chocolate vibe.
Toss in a soft date or two before blending to give it a natural caramel flavor.

Serving suggestions
Portion into a bowl (or 2 smaller servings) and top with all your favorite toppings. We love adding granola for crunch, mini dark chocolate chips or cacao nibs, hemp seeds, and chia seeds.
Drizzle a spoonful of natural nut butter, such as almond butter or cashew butter, on top, then sprinkle with a pinch of sea salt.
Add fresh fruit like berries, sliced bananas, and kiwis.
FAQS
This usually happens when there’s too much liquid. Add water one tablespoon at a time and just enough to help the blender move.
You can prep the base and freeze it, but smoothie bowls are best served fresh for the right texture.
