If you want to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, I recommend this Healthy Shamrock Shake that I found at the end of a vegan and gluten free rainbow. 🙂 Thick and creamy, just like the original, but packed with fruit and veggies!
OK, I have to be honest. I’ve never actually had a Shamrock Shake. It’s a McDonald’s thing, right? I just know that it’s green and probably full of a bunch of sh!t we shouldn’t be drinking.*
So considering I have no idea what it should taste like, my only criteria for my version of a Healthy Shamrock Shake was that it had to be green. And shake-like too, I guess.
Healthy Shamrock Shake
My aim was thick and creamy.
Shakes are thick and creamy.
Bananas make things thick and creamy.
Using frozen bananas add to both the sweetness and ice cream like quality for my shake. No dairy required!
Frozen bananas transform into a soft serve like mixture, perfect for a creamy shake.
This is using my run of the mill Hamilton Beach blender, by the way. You don’t need any fancy equipment to get this consistency.
Instead of weird food colouring, I used nature.
Spinach leaves will lend a beautiful pale green colour without leaving any taste behind. In fact you could just tell the anti green drink folks that it is in fact food colouring!
They will not know that there is 3 generous handfuls of spinach in the blender unless you wan them to.
Insert winky face. 😉
Fresh cucumber is another great addition for being sneaky.
It has a mild flavour that makes this shake easy to drink. Lots and lots of hydration from cucumbers. That moisture is so good for the skin in these dry winter temperatures.
There was an infographic floating around on Facebook that stated the McDonald’s version has 93 grams of sugar in it.
This version contains under 20 and that is nature’s sugar from the bananas which also has protein, fibre and potassium. Real food has all kinds of benefits. Why on God’s green (see what I did there?) Earth would anyone sell something with 93 freaking grams of white, useless sugar? Yikes.
On the bright side, we don’t have to drink it. We have the power to choose differently. It’s all choices.

- 2 frozen bananas
- 1 cup almond milk
- 3 handfuls spinach
- 1/2 medium cucumber
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder optional
- Blend frozen bananas and milk together until it's ice cream like
- Add in the spinach and cucumber and blend well
