How to Make Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix
The instructions for this healthy hot chocolate blend are pretty darn simple. Place all of the ingredients in a bowl and whisk.
Boom.
Store the mixture in a sealed glass jar. This vegan hot cocoa mix will last forever!
To make dairy-free hot chocolate add a tablespoon of the prepared mixture to a mug. Then warm a cup of your milk of choice in a small saucepan over medium heat. Pour into the mug with the hot cocoa mix in it and stir well.
What is store-bought hot chocolate mix made of?
If you’re wondering why make your own vegan hot chocolate mix? The manufactured version has a lot of ‘extras’ that aren’t good for you. This is a snippet of what is in those oh-so-convenient packages of hot chocolate you purchase at the grocery store:
- sugar
- sucrose
- corn syrup
- hydrogenated oils
- artificial flavour
- carrageenan
- and a bit of cocoa
That’s in one package and it is all empty calories and zero nutrition.
The Honour System’s gluten-free hot chocolate recipe has none of that. But it does have coffee. 😉
Woot woot!
Serving Suggestions and Substitutions:
- Top with vegan whipped cream, vegan marshmallows, vegan chocolate chips
- For different variations prepare with various dairy-free milk options like oat milk, cashew milk, hemp milk, soy milk, almond milk, or coconut milk – soy milk is the highest in protein
- Sprinkle with spices like cayenne pepper and chili powder for Mexican hot chocolate
- Experiment with flavors like vanilla extract, peppermint extract, nutmeg, or maple syrup to taste
- Drizzle with a teaspoon of vegan caramel sauce
