It’s redundant to say that the cold weather is creeping in. Apparently, Canadians are a nation of weather observers. Ride in any elevator or wait in line at the post office, etc. and I can guarantee you someone will bring up how hot, how cold, how much rain, how much snow, wind chill or humidex. Guarantee it!
I suppose it’s because our seasons are actually seasons. Unlike the consistent warmth of more southern countries like Mexico or Brazil, we experience a cold winter, warm spring, hot summer and temperate fall. They all have their own specific feel.
And what I’m feeling right now is flipping cold! I even saw a couple of flurries of snowflakes and was not happy whatsoever. Snow? It’s early for that, isn’t it?
Well, unfortunately the weather is something I have no control over. I do, however, have a few comforting and delicious ways to warm up when the air outside turns angry.
Meet my homemade hot chocolate mix!
You probably don’t need to hear this, but if for some reason you aren’t reading the labels of everything you buy (please do that, OK?) this is a snippet of what is I those oh-so-convenient packages of hot chocolate you purchase at the grocery store:
Sugar, sucralose, corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, artificial flavour and carrageenan. Oh, and a bit of cocoa.
That’s in one package. Pretty scary.
The Honour System take on Hot Chocolate has none of that. But it does have coffee!
- 3/4 cup cocoa
- 1 cup coconut sugar
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 4 tbsp instant coffee
1.Whisk all ingredients together well an store for up to 4 weeks in an air tight container
2.Add 1 tbsp to 1 1/4 cups of hot milk, whisking until smooth
