We love this cole slaw with ranch dressing and promise you will too. Looking for more cabbage-based recipes? Try this garlic and lime red cabbage slaw or this lighter, tangy vinaigrette coleslaw for some fresh ideas. Check out all of our side dish recipes for more inspo.

Why you will love this recipe

It is SO EASY. Dump it all in a bowl and stir. Anyone can do it, and it takes very little time in actual hands-on work. It does need to sit in the fridge for a few hours, but still. Super simple.

Ranch slaw is a great idea for healthy meal prep. It is delish as a quick side dish with baked chicken drumsticks. Toss a can of tuna in, and presto, you’ve got lunch. What can’t this slaw do?

This recipe is already naturally gluten-free, which is a bonus for taking to BBQs, etc. You can also easily modify this recipe for special diets like the Whole30. We use a dairy-free ranch dressing, which makes it Whole30 friendly.

Ingredient Notes

Find the complete ingredient list with measurements in the recipe card below.

  • Coleslaw Mix – We like a colorful blend of cabbage and carrots, but feel free to choose your fave slaw.
  • Ranch Dressing – Our choice is this homemade ranch dressing, made with Greek yogurt. Or use Hidden Valley Ranch if that makes life easier.
  • Seasonings – Fresh chopped dill, dried onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Vinegar – A splash of acidity balances the creaminess. This is (notoriously picky) Joe’s expert tip, and it never fails.

Equipment

Nothing fancy, folks!

  • Cutting Board and Knife – For chopping the dill, if you use fresh. I highly recommend investing in a Victorinox chef’s knife. I’ve had mine for over a decade, and it is the best.
  • Large Mixing Bowl – Use a large bowl for mixing and storing your slaw. Choose one with a lid for storing in the fridge.

Instructions

Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom for the FULL recipe details.

Step 1

First, add all of the ingredients to a large mixing bowl.

Step 2

Next, stir everything well to coat all of the coleslaw mix.

Step 3

Finally, cover the bowl and place it in the fridge to chill.

Let it rest in the refrigerator for 2-4 hours before serving for the best flavor.

Expert Tip!

Chilling the coleslaw and letting it rest for a few hours allows the flavors to develop. Also, it will soften the veggies slightly, taking the harsh edge off the raw cabbage and carrots.

Substitutions and recipe variations

Swap in any variety of fresh herbs instead of the dill. Parsley, cilantro, and basil are all super delish. Add some chopped chives or green onions.

Make this Whole30-friendly by using a mayonnaise based dairy-free ranch dressing, or add some heat with this spicy ranch dressing.

Serving suggestions

This dish is tasty alongside pretty much any protein. We love it in the summer with this flavorful chili lime chicken, or in the winter with baked honey mustard chicken. Serve it with grilled steak or shrimp, too!

Scoop it onto sandwiches or burgers. We love this turkey burger recipe. It is moist and juicy.

Use it as a base for a hearty lunch salad by stirring in leftover rotisserie chicken or a can of tuna. It is perfect for toting to work or school.

FAQS

What do I do if my cole slaw is watery?

Cabbage tends to release moisture when it sits in the dressing. A quick stir in the bowl before serving will reincorporate it into the dish. You could also drain it if you preferred.

Can I make this recipe vegan or dairy-free?

Absolutely! This recipe can be made with this dairy-free ranch dressing or a vegan avocado-based mayo ranch dressing.

Storage tips

To Store: Keep any leftovers in a sealed airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Before serving, give it a gentle toss to redistribute any dressing that may have settled.

Expert Tip!

Store in a cold part of the fridge – the back of the fridge is colder and keeps slaw crisper than the door.
