Why You Will Love This Recipe
- The original McDonald’s Shamrock Shake has 113 grams of sugar mostly from high fructose corn syrup that they use to make the shamrock shake syrup. This version contains under 20 grams, which is natural sugar from bananas. Bananas also contain protein, fiber, and potassium. Real food has all kinds of benefits.
- We use spinach to add a green color to this treat instead of sketchy food dyes.
- This recipe is naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan. Bonus!
Ingredients
- Frozen bananas – Using frozen bananas adds both sweetness and ice cream quality to this banana mint smoothie.
- Milk – This recipe uses almond milk, which is plant-based.
- Spinach – The baby spinach leaves will lend a green color without using green food coloring or dye.
- Cucumber – Another way to sneak in some nutrition.
- Vanilla protein powder – This gives the shake some creaminess and adds staying power. We recommend using Ora So Lean So Clean because of its clean ingredient list.
- Peppermint extract – Add just a drop to give that classic Shamrock Shake mint flavor.
Expert Tip!
Freeze super-ripe bananas for the sweetest taste. Peel and break the bananas into smaller pieces before freezing!
Equipment
- Blender – For this recipe, we use a high-speed blender. After putting it to the test, we learned that they worked best to break up and blend the frozen bananas.
- 1000 watts of professional power can crush ice and break down any tough ingredient.
- The 72 oz professional blender pitcher is excellent for making frozen drinks and creamy smoothies.

Refreshing and flavorful mixture of cucumber, banana and spinach is really surprising. I am not used to mixing different fruits on my regular shakes as I am a bit picky and afraid that it might turn out well but guess what, this one is really good!
Thanks Cole! It always feels good to please a picky eater. 🙂 I love switching it up to see what works and surprisingly cucumber is such a good addition. Glad you enjoyed it!
OMG! Creamy smoothie. I will make sure that I will make one. Love the thick texture of the smoothie. Only banana has the power to do it. Rich in Vitamin A, C, Calcium and Iron which is good for kids.
Hope you love it Kimberly! The frozen banana is key to the creaminess. 🙂
Love your take on the Shamrock Shake! 93 g of sugar is just ridiculous. It makes me so made that food companies are well aware of the soaring rates of obesity and nutrition related diseases, yet they continue to pump out “foods” like this.
Terribly disturbing that profits come before the safe, responsible thing to do. I hope people start sending the message to these companies by not supporting them financially. Skip the drive through and hit up the produce aisle. 🙂
