Ingredients

Find the complete ingredient list, with measurements, in the recipe card below.

  • Strawberries – This recipe is tailor-made for fresh summer strawberries.
  • Balsamic Glaze – If you want to make it yourself, we have an easy tutorial on how to make balsamic glaze. You can also buy it. It is usually next to the balsamic vinegar in the grocery store.
  • Fresh Mint – Look for the tiny whole mint leaves in the bunch for a cute presentation.
  • Cracked Black Pepper – This is optional, but adds such a unique touch. Just a few grinds of pepper enhance the strawberries’ natural sweetness.

Expert Tip!

For choosing the most flavorful strawberries, look for ones that are bright red in color and are uniformly sized. This ensures the best flavor and even ripeness.

Equipment

  • Cutting board and knife – For slicing the strawberries and chopping mint.
  • Mixing bowl and spoon – For stirring the ingredients together.

Step 1

First, hull and slice the fresh strawberries (snacking on a few as you go, of course! ) and place the slices in a large mixing bowl.

A bowl of chopped berries.

Step 2

Second, drizzle the balsamic glaze over the berries.

Then, add the cracked black pepper to the mixture and give it a toss.

Step 3

Finally, toss in the chopped mint.

Give it one last gentle stir.

Step 4

You can now leave the mixture for up to an hour or serve right away.

Leaving it longer allows the flavors to really develop.

After plating, you can drizzle on more balsamic glaze if desired.

Substitutions

  • Substitute the mint with different fresh herbs, such as fresh basil, to switch up the flavor.
  • Use balsamic vinegar and brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup instead of the balsamic glaze.

Recipe Variations

  • Experiment with different berries like blackberries and fresh cranberries.
  • Blend balsamic strawberries with honey or agave syrup and pour into popsicle molds. Freeze until solid for a refreshing and healthy frozen treat.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve this in a dish as a healthy dessert. Garnish with more fresh mint leaves.
  • Enjoy as a topping for vanilla ice cream or yogurt, along with some granola for crunch.
  • Add on top of angel food cake or pound cake with a dollop of whipped cream for a twist on the traditional strawberry shortcake.
  • Make your breakfast a fancy affair by using balsamic berries as a topping for waffles or pancakes.
  • Serve with salad! This arugula salad with goat cheese is delicious with these berries.
  • Add on top of grilled protein such as chicken or oven roast salmon.
  • Make a strawberry bruschetta by layering pieces of crostini toast with cream cheese or ricotta with the balsamic strawberries.

FAQS

Can balsamic strawberries be made ahead of time for a party or event?

Yes, they can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to four hours. However, to maintain freshness and flavor, it’s best to assemble any dishes or desserts containing balsamic strawberries shortly before serving.

Storage Tips

This dish does not keep longer than 4 hours. We recommend letting it sit for one hour to absorb the flavor, but anything longer than four hours will actually break the berries down into mush.

This is such a sophisticated dessert! The sweetness of the strawberries really is complimented by the sweet-tart of the balsamic vinegar. What I did is top the strawberries on my homemade vanilla ice cream. Talk about delish!! I don’t think I want to have my strawberries without the balsamic reduction. This is a great idea.

    1. Right? Sophisticated is a great word. But still so easy! I love the idea of adding the vanilla ice cream – and homemade to boot. πŸ™‚
