  • Nothing to bake and no oven involved! The prep for these apple snacks is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Just slice apples and shake them with the cinnamon and sugar. The kids can even help.

Ingredients

  • apples – We love using honeycrisp, galas, or fuji apples. Choose your favorite! See the expert tips below for how to pick out the juiciest apples.
  • cinnamon – It is like this spice is tailor-made for apple recipes. Noting goes better with apples than a dusting of cinnamon.
  • coconut sugar – Just a sprinkle of added sweetness. This is totally optional.
Ingredients on a counter.

Equipment

  • sharp knife – We recommend a good paring knife for this task.
  • cutting board – For slicing the apples into wedges.
  • large bag – We use a large Ziploc bag and wash it out afterward to reuse it.

Instructions

Step 1

First, start by giving the apples a good wash. We usually do this by holding the apple under running cold water and lightly removing any dirt or debris with our fingers.

However, if you’re concerned about pesticide residue, you can create a vinegar solution for a deeper clean. Do this by mixing 1 part vinegar (white or apple cider vinegar) with 3 parts water and soaking the fruit in this solution for 3-5 minutes, then rinse under cold water and dry.

Step 2

Next, slice the washed apples into slices.

Thin slices or thick slices – it’s up to you! We leave the skin on for some added fiber.

Step 3

Then, place the apple wedges into the baggie.

Sprinkle in the cinnamon and coconut sugar overtop of the apples.

Step 4

Finally, close the bag and give it all a good shake. You want all of the apple slices to be coated well with the cinnamon and sugar.

It doesn’t take too long as the juices from apples help them to stick fairly easily.

Step 5

Enjoy this snack right away or pop the whole bag into the fridge and you will have a crisp, tasty treat ready for eating.

Expert tips

For choosing high-quality fresh apples, check to see if the fruit is firm without any soft spots. Avoid apples that have any blemishes or dull patches. We always like to give them a quick sniff – a flavorful apple will typically emit a fruity aroma.

Also, remember to check the weight as heavier apples may be juicier!

Recipe variations

  • Another method of preparing this recipe would be stirring the apples, cinnamon, and sugar (if using) all together in a mixing bowl instead of shaking them in a bag. Then just eat them right out of the bowl!
  • Spin these into Healthy Caramel Apples! Perfect for Halloween (or anytime).
  • Add a few more warm seasonings such as nutmeg, cloves, or ginger. You could even use pumpkin pie spice to celebrate fall! Stir them in with the cinnamon and coconut sugar and enjoy all of the autumnal bliss.

Serving suggestions

  • Dip the apple snacks in protein-rich nut butter such as almond butter, peanut butter, or a healthy Nutella for a popular after-school snack. Place the apples on a side plate with a small bowl of the nut butter on it for dipping or simply drizzle it over top of the slices.
  • Chop the apple snacks into smaller pieces and create a delicious parfait by layering the cut-up apples along with Greek yogurt and a few handfuls of peanut butter granola for some crunch and added flavor. You can also add more fruit like bananas, raisins, and grapes. Top the parfait off with a strawberry and a sprinkling of chocolate chips to be a little extra.
  • Make sweet apple nachos! Create this healthier dessert by arranging the apple slices on a plate like nachos, then drizzle with melted dark chocolate, sprinkle with chopped maple cinnamon almonds, and add a dollop of whipped cream or vanilla yogurt.
