Why we love this recipe
Bulletproof coffee – the original recipe from Dave Asprey – features grass-fed, unsalted butter or ghee along with the MCT oil. This version that is made without butter is awesome for people who follow a vegan lifestyle.
We also love this variation as it is perfect for folks who are doing a whole 30 challenge which we love doing every year for a reset.
Furthermore, it has a creamy taste and makes for a delicious cup of coffee.
Ingredients
- freshly brewed hot coffee – you can use regular or decaf. We do recommend using organic coffee beans such as Kicking Horse Coffee as conventionally grown coffee often involves the use of synthetic pesticides to control pests and these pesticides can potentially leave residues on the coffee beans.
- MCT oil – you can also substitute coconut oil instead. They are both derived from coconuts, but they do have some differences.
MCT oil is a concentrated form of medium-chain triglycerides extracted from coconut oil. It contains a higher concentration of medium-chain fatty acids. MCT oil is a liquid at room temperature and is more rapidly digested and absorbed by the body compared to other types of healthy fats. In addition, due to its quick absorption, MCT oil is often used as a source of instant energy and is popular among athletes and those following a low-carbohydrate or keto diet. It is also believed to have potential benefits for brain health and weight management.
Coconut oil, in comparison, is a natural oil extracted from the flesh of mature coconuts. It contains a mixture of fatty acids, including medium-chain fatty acids, but also long-chain fatty acids. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature and while coconut oil does contain some MCTs, it has a lower concentration of medium-chain fatty acids compared to MCT oil.
Equipment
- coffee maker – we love a French press!
- blender – we use a Nutribullet as it is small, compact, and easy to clean but any blender works great.
Instructions
Step1
First, start by brewing your coffee.
Again, as mentioned above we love using a French press for our morning java. In addition to being delicious, it is also an environmentally friendly option since it doesn’t require disposable filters.
Step 2
Next, pour a cup of the hot coffee and a tbsp of MCT oil into your blender.
Step 3
Then, blend the coffee for five seconds.
It should be bubbling and frothy after being blended.
Step 4
Finally, pour the mixture into your favorite mug and enjoy.
Expert tip
Be sure to blend the mixture thoroughly! Drawing from my experience, this ensures that the oil and coffee are properly combined, resulting in a smooth and consistent texture throughout your drink.
Recipe variations
- Make it extra creamy by adding a splash of non-dairy milk such as coconut milk, almond milk, or hemp milk before blending.
- Add a spoonful of almond butter to the mix for a boost of flavor and protein.
- In addition, make it taste like a vanilla latte by adding a drop of vanilla extract or even a scoop of plant-based vanilla protein powder.
- Sweeten it up by adding a teaspoon of natural sweetener such as stevia or coconut sugar.
Serving Suggestions
- Enjoy it as is! Bulletproof Coffee can be savored on its own as a satisfying and energizing beverage. Pour it into a mug and relish the rich flavors and creamy texture.
- Pair it with a nutritious breakfast, such as avocado sweet potato toast, or a bowl of chocolate overnight oats.
- Turn it into a fancy coffee house drink by sprinkling some cinnamon on top – use a stencil to make a cute design!
FAQS
This is a personal choice. Generally, it is often consumed for breakfast and can function as a meal replacement for some individuals while others may prefer it as a component of a balanced meal.
It offers several benefits including appetite control, cognitive enhancement, and plant-based nutrition. Check out this article on the 7 Science-Based Benefits of MCT Oil for more detailed information.
Yes, this vegan version can be just as effective in providing sustained energy, mental clarity, and the potential for enhanced focus.
This can be influenced by various lifestyle factors, including diet quality, physical activity, stress management, sleep, etc. While Bulletproof Coffee can be a part of a weight loss strategy, it’s essential to address these other aspects of your lifestyle to achieve sustainable and long-term results.

Nutrition
Tastes just like a good coffee, and the MCT oil just gives so many added bonuses. I read the article that you linked, and I decided I would make this my new morning coffee!
This coffee always gives a great boost of energy in the morning.
Being a coffee lover, this is a great way to use MCT oil in our diet. I have heard great benefits of it and it’s on my list to shop. For now, I used coconut oil. I was a little skeptical until I made it but I am so glad that I tried it. Thanks for all the info.
My favorite way to make coffee! It gives me energy all day long!
Gave this a try and it was smooth and energizing. The coconut oil gives it a subtle, creamy texture.
This variation of bulletproof coffee was so good. I also added some coconut milk and it was so creamy.
Love a new good idea on how to use the MCT oil in my pantry! Tried this BPC this morning, added oatmilk and a little raw sugar, and it was perfect.
This is one of my favorite ways to drink coffee. I use the optional vanilla extra and also add a pinch of salt! It’s amazing!
I followed your suggestion to add a little coconut milk, and it was soooo creamy and delicious! This coffee makes it easier for me to quit my full of sugar and calories coffee creamer addiction!
This was a really interesting and power packed coffee. The first time I had it this way. Tasted good too.
This coffee is perfect for those days when you’re dragging. It’s my go-to on those days when I’ve not had a good night’s sleep!
What a delicious idea! No sugar or cream! I will try it!
I have a NutriBullet and was envisioning using it so I guess I will have to wait for the coffee to cool down a bit before attempting to open the top. I never tried anything hot in there before.
I wonder how this would work with iced coffee instead of hot.
Hi Dawn! Let me know how your nutribullet works with this. I have a friend who uses hers for it and it seems to work fine. Good luck! 🙂
i also do this! Never liked the idea of butter so always stuck w coconut oil and wow…the energy boost! On the nutribullet question….I personally don’t recommend it because I have dealt w hot liquids in mine befor and it formed a vacuumed like effect and I could not open the top for anything till it cooled off way later. I use my vita mix and.its perfect.
Thanks for letting me know about the nutribullet. I don’t really have the counter space for another appliance anyway. And the Vitamix? Jealous. 😉
I’ve been doing this for a couple years now. Almost every morning. It is delicious!! And so easy. 🙂
So delicious! Do you use a nutribullet? I find my big ole blender a pain to wash for such a small amount of liquid. Hate dishes. 😉
I keep hearing about bulletproof coffee and I must say I am intrigued. BUT, the thought of adding butter to my coffee makes my stomach hurt a tiny bit 😉 Coconut oil though? I can do. I wonder how this would work for tea? Hmmm… (P.S. great shots!)
Tea could work too, I’d bet. Use Earl Grey tea and make a “London Fog”. Mmmmm. 🙂 Great idea! Thanks Gwen.
