Dairy Free Sour Cream
Going dairy free doesn’t mean giving up taste. This Dairy Free Sour Cream recipe brings all the creaminess you are hoping for. A delicious vegan, gluten free substitute!
So easy to make, this Dairy Free Sour Cream will become a staple in your fridge.
Anything you crave with a fresh dollop of sour cream you can use this lovely, cream cashew based vegan version.
It’s incredible!
DAIRY FREE SOUR CREAM
I love the magic of nuts. Almonds become delicious butter. Peanut butter becomes ‘crackilicious’ fudge. Now, cashews become sour cream. Really! Sour freakin’ cream.
I had success in the past using cashews to make an uber creamy Alfredo sauce, so there’s no reason this experiment should turn out any differently.
There are quite a few reasons I’ve been looking for an alternative to the dairy version. Firstly, people are always looking for options that don’t include dairy and I like to please the people! 🙂
Secondly, my grocery seems to only sell organic sour cream in fairly large tubs. I’ve been creative with using it in baked goods, like these delicious sour cream dark chocolate cookies, but sometimes it ends up getting thrown out. I hate wasting food and money. Using the cashews allows me to make smaller batches resulting in less waste-guilt.
This recipe could not be simpler.
The only time consuming thing is soaking the cashews (overnight is best, but 2 hours will work) and I found that the sour cream tasted better and had a creamier, sour cream-ish texture after it sat overnight in the fridge.
Other than that, all you need to do is blend.
No chopping, no stirring, minimal clean up, boom!
HOW TO MAKE DAIRY FREE SOUR CREAM
Cover your cashews with water and let soak.
Throw all the ingredients in a blender and let it do the work for you!
Here’s a birds-eye view of the action.
Voila!
Small batch, dairy free sour cream, free of anything creepy that may be lurking in the grocery store tubs.
Drizzle over tacos, top your vegan chili, I even think this would taste amazing instead of yogurt in my homemade Ranch dressing. Yum. 🙂
The opportunities are endless!

Can you use almonds instead of cashews ?
Cashews are much creamier when blended so I am not sure how almonds would work. Let us know if you try it!

Wow, this is such a clever idea! I would have never thought to make sour cream out of cashews. I love it and the fact that it doesn’t have anything strange in it. 😀
I’m beginning to wonder if there’s nothing cashews can’t do! 😉 Thanks Cindy!

Ooh, I am pinning this! I try to reduce my dairy especially products like sour cream which are quite heavily processed, so Im sure this will come in handy, most definitely next time I make some mexican – loooove me some sour cream with my tacos! Oh, and well done on finishing the cleanse, very impressive indeed 🙂
Thanks so much Dearna! I’m so glad to be finished the cleanse. I love my food! 🙂 I’m with you on reducing the dairy. I’m pretty much down to cheese now. I don’t think I’ll ever fully give up the cheese. 😉

This is so brilliant!! I love sour cream and like you, I try to avoid dairy as much as humanly possible. I’m so amazed by how much you can do with raw cashews. I MUST do this ASAP!!!
Thanks Julia! Cashews are the crème de la crème of nuts. 😉 I hope you enjoy!
