HONEY MUSTARD SAUCE WITHOUT HONEY
It might seem strange to have a recipe for honey mustard sans honey but as I mentioned in a few recent posts, I was following the Whole 30 with a couple of friends to shed those excess stay-at-home pounds a few of us have gained over the last year.
That means no sugar, even honey or maple syrup which are my go-to natural sweeteners.
HONEY MUSTARD SAUCE WITHOUT HONEY – INGREDIENTS
I love short ingredient lists, dont you?
- dates
- mustard
- olive oil
- water
- lemon juice
- mayo
Dates are compliant on the Whole 30, so I have been frequently visiting my giant Costco bag of these luscious morsels to satisfy my sweet tooth. It was during one of those trips that the idea came to me to use them in a honey mustard sauce recipe.
Dates are the perfect honey substitute for honey mustard because you really don’t need something that is super sweet for this sauce. The honey just balances the spice from the mustard and creaminess from the mayo.
Mayo is totally allowed while on the Whole 30 which makes life even easier. Just be sure to read the labels to double-check that there is no canola oil or sugar. Some companies like to sneak that stuff in for shelf life.
I like this brand! The label is cute too. 😉
Better yet, you can also make your own homemade mayonnaise if you’re up for it. It isn’t that hard and tastes so much fresher. Put it in the fancy jar with the cute label after it’s made! haha
How do you make honey mustard sauce from scratch?
Guys, it is so easy.
Start with the dates. If they aren’t super soft, soak them in hot water for a couple of minutes. That way they will break up and blend easier.
All of the ingredients except the mayo get blitzed in the blender. Add the mixture to a bowl and stir in your mayonnaise. Done!
FAQ’S, TIPS AND SUBSTITUTIONS
Is honey mustard healthy? This all depends on the ingredients you use. This recipe definitely falls in the healthy category.
What is the difference between Dijon mustard and regular mustard? Dijon is spicier as it uses the black mustard seeds over the yellow ones in regular mustard. Dijon is also a bit creamier and less vinegary.
TIP! Watch the information on the labels because some mustards and mayos have sugar in them. Make sure you purchase sugar-free products for this recipe.
If you are looking for a vegan honey mustard sauce substitute a vegan mayonnaise instead of the egg-based one. There are a few tofu-based vegan mayos that are really good.
I serve this sauce with these Gluten Free Chicken Fingers. Another great whole 30 recipe is this almond flour-based Gluten Free Breadcrumbs – it adds some crunch to veggies by sprinkling it on top before roasting them and then dipping them into this yummy sauce.
So good!

Love this recipe. Swapping dates with honey is a great option to make it healthy and retaining the sweetness.
It sure is! Thanks so much, Surabhi 🙂
The fruit dates are naturally sweet, and I love snacking them (though it deems quite expensive in Australia).
Good thing we don’t have to worry about the sweetness of honey coz Australia’s honey is pure and no additives.
Yes, local honey is always best!
